Juventus have appointed Frederic Massara as their new head of the sporting area, the club confirmed. The move is part of a restructuring effort led by Giovanni Carnevali, aiming to clarify roles and responsibilities within the organisation.
Massara was chosen over Matteo Tognozzi due to his greater experience, having previously held key roles at both AC Milan and Roma. Carnevali and Massara have a long-standing relationship, dating back almost two decades, with Carnevali previously considering Massara for a position at Sassuolo before Paolo Maldini brought him to Milan.
Massara arrives at a critical time for Juventus, with a significant number of players potentially available for transfer. The club is currently hampered by a lack of movement in the outgoing transfer market, preventing manager Luciano Spalletti from strengthening the squad following last season’s performance. Juventus finished the 2023-24 Serie A season in third place.
Currently, the club are seeking buyers for players such as Fabio Cambiaso, Manuel Thuram, Gleison Bremer, and Hans Nicolò Kelly, with any significant sales expected to fund new acquisitions. A larger group of players, including Arkadiusz Milik, are also considered surplus to requirements. The situation is further complicated by ongoing discussions regarding potential departures and arrivals, including those of players like Di Gregorio, David, Openda, Douglas Luiz, Cabal, Koopmeiners, Gatti, Joao Mario, Miretti and Arthur.
Alongside Massara’s appointment, Giorgio Chiellini has transitioned to the role of “Chief Club Affairs Officer”, focusing on representing the club’s interests with sporting institutions. This move allows Chiellini to concentrate on political aspects of the club, having previously been involved in the appointment of Spalletti and the contract renewal of Kenan Yildiz. Carnevali stated the club is building a “solid, competent and cohesive structure” to support their ambitions.
