Kylian Mbappe’s representatives have responded to reports of a tense atmosphere between the forward and Real Madrid staff, describing some of the criticism as ‘exaggerated’. The reports, initially published by The Athletic, detailed a ‘flare-up’ between Mbappe and a member of the coaching staff prior to the 1-1 draw against Real Betis two weeks ago.
The incident reportedly involved Mbappe reacting angrily to being called offside during a training game, using insulting language towards the staff member. This follows separate reports of an altercation between teammates Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Carreras during a training session, suggesting a potentially wider issue with team morale at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mbappe’s camp acknowledged the incident but framed it as an overreaction to his handling of a recent hamstring injury recovery period. They stated that the criticism “does not reflect the reality of Kylian’s commitment and daily work for the team,” emphasizing that his recovery was “strictly supervised by the club.”
Notably, Mbappe’s representatives did not explicitly deny the tension with the staff member or the existence of a negative atmosphere at the Valdebebas training ground. This lack of direct denial is likely to fuel speculation in Madrid, particularly given the recent indirect criticisms leveled at Mbappe by manager Alvaro Arbeloa following their 2-0 win over Espanyol. President Florentino Perez is also reportedly frustrated with the player’s recent behaviour.
Mbappe joined Real Madrid last summer after a protracted transfer saga from Paris Saint-Germain. He has scored 27 goals in 32 appearances for Los Blancos this season, but has faced scrutiny for leaving Spain during his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury, putting his availability for Sunday’s El Clasico in doubt. The club are hoping he will be fit to feature in the crucial match against Barcelona.
The reports suggest that Real Madrid are looking for Mbappe to step up as a leader within the squad, and that his behaviour has not yet met those expectations. The situation raises questions about the integration of a superstar signing into the existing team dynamic, and the pressure Mbappe faces to deliver both on and off the pitch.
