Katie McCabe has completed a move from Arsenal to Chelsea, the clubs confirmed on Monday. The Republic of Ireland captain has signed a contract with Chelsea that runs until June 30, 2029, with the option of a further year. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
The move represents a significant shift in the Women’s Super League landscape, with McCabe leaving one of the competition’s traditional powerhouses to join a direct rival. The 30-year-old has been a key figure for Arsenal, making 306 appearances for the club across all competitions. She captained the Gunners to League Cup success in 2024 and a Champions League title in the 2024-2025 season.
McCabe originally joined Arsenal in 2015 from Sheffiled United, quickly establishing herself as a versatile and influential player. Primarily a left-back, she is capable of playing in midfield and has consistently delivered attacking contributions with her crossing ability and set-piece delivery. She has also become a prominent figure for the Irish national team, earning over 80 caps.
In a video released by Chelsea, McCabe revealed she supported the club as a child, stating, “It’s a new chapter in my career. It’s something I feel I’m ready to take on right now… This club has had success for so many years. I want to continue to push and drive that, and for me, it’s about bringing that success back to Chelsea.”
Chelsea have been active in securing their squad for the future, recently extending the contract of Sandy Baltimore. McCabe’s arrival adds further quality and experience to Emma Hayes’s team, strengthening their position as contenders for domestic and European honours. The transfer is a blow for Arsenal, who lose a captain and a key player as they look to maintain their challenge at the top of the WSL.
