McKennie Opens Up on Family, Football, and Life at Juventus
Juventus and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie has given a wide-ranging interview, offering a rare, personal insight into his life, career, and the values that drive him both on and off the pitch. The interview, part of a series on DAZN, revealed the 25-year-old's journey from a multi-sport youth to a key figure in Turin and his perspective on life as a professional.
McKennie, who became the first American to play for Juventus upon his arrival in 2020, reflected on the unique path that led him to Turin. He recounted how a childhood spent in Germany, where his father was stationed with the US military, led him to soccer over American football. "I played both," McKennie explained, recalling his decision at age eleven. "I told my mom I loved American football 99.8%, but I loved soccer 99.9%. She said, 'I think you have your decision made.'
His family remains a central pillar in his life. He credits his mother for her unwavering support, driving him to countless practices, and his father, a military veteran, for instilling discipline. He also humorously noted his sister works as a medium, a fact that once left a USMNT teammate in awe during a reading. "My family is everything to me," McKennie stated, emphasizing their role in his grounding.
The interview delved into the mental side of the game, where McKennie revealed a key to his resilience: a life beyond soccer. He described how a serious foot fracture in 2021, which kept him from walking, was a pivotal moment. "I realized how important it was to have things outside of football," he said, noting his love for golf and his dogs. He consciously avoids the noise of social media and sports media to protect his mental health, a strategy he credits for his stability.
His move to Juventus, a club of immense stature, was a significant step. "When I signed, I thought, 'Wow, I could be here for ten years, a third of my life'," McKennie reflected. He acknowledged the initial doubts about an American succeeding at such a club but believes his performances have spoken for themselves. His relationship with coach Massimiliano Allegri is a key factor in his success at the club, where he has developed into a versatile and combative presence in the midfield.
McKennie also spoke about his relationship with USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter, praising his ability to manage a diverse group of players. He also reserved high praise for Italy and Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti, with whom he worked at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. "I would say he is the best manager I've had," McKennie stated. "He knows how to get the best out of different people. Sometimes he needs to shout, other times a quiet chat is enough. He has a way of making you want to listen and do what he asks."
Looking ahead, McKennie's future at Juventus appears central to the club's project. With a contract until 2025, his blend of tactical intelligence, physicality, and a newfound maturity on and off the pitch makes him a cornerstone for both his club and country. His journey from a military base in Germany to the top of Serie A is a testament to the diverse path and grounded perspective he continues to champion.
