Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Leeds United, the club confirmed. The 26-year-old joins the Gunners as a backup option, potentially competing with David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga for playing time.
Meslier progressed through the youth ranks at FC Lorient, making 28 Ligue 2 appearances before moving to Leeds in 2019. He quickly established himself as a key player for the Yorkshire club, featuring in 107 Premier League matches. However, he lost his starting position this season, falling behind Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow in the pecking order.
The France youth international, who earned 13 caps for the French under-20 side, was considered a potential candidate for a senior international call-up in 2023. Despite not breaking into the full national team, his move to Arsenal represents a significant opportunity to continue his development within a top Premier League club.
Arsenal’s acquisition of Meslier adds further depth to their goalkeeping department. Raya made 51 appearances last season, while Arrizabalaga arrived from Chelsea for a fee of around £6 million last summer, making 12 appearances. Meslier’s arrival provides competition and cover for both goalkeepers, particularly in cup competitions, with Arsenal’s FA Cup campaign set to begin in the third round against either Gillingham or Crawley Town. The move also increases the French contingent at Arsenal, joining William Saliba in North London. This signing bolsters Arsenal’s squad depth as they continue to compete at the highest level of English football.
Meslier’s signing is a low-risk, high-reward move for Arsenal, bringing in a proven Premier League goalkeeper without a transfer fee. It also provides a fresh start for Meslier, allowing him to compete for a place in a team challenging for major honours.
