Lionel Messi has been included in Argentina’s 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite recently overcoming a minor fitness concern. The Argentine Football Association revealed the roster on Thursday night, confirming the Inter Miami forward’s place in the defending champions’ team.
Alongside Messi, three players currently featuring in Ligue 1 have been selected: Leonardo Balerdi and Facundo Medina of Olympique de Marseille, and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, also with Marseille. Valentin Barco, recently of Strasbourg and set to join Chelsea, also makes the cut, as does Nicolas Tagliafico of Olympique Lyonnais.
Notably absent from the squad is Franco Mastantuono, replaced by José Manuel Lopez of Palmeiras. Atlético de Madrid boasts the largest club representation with six players called up: Juan Musso, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, Nico Gonzalez, Giuliano Simeone, and Julian Álvarez. The squad features a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, reflecting coach Lionel Scaloni’s commitment to both stability and innovation.
Argentina will begin their title defense on June 17th against Algeria, followed by matches against Austria on June 22nd and Jordan on June 28th. The inclusion of Messi, a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, is a significant boost for Argentina’s chances of retaining the trophy. He remains a pivotal figure for the national team, and his presence will undoubtedly inspire his teammates. Scaloni has reassured the nation that Messi is fit and ready to lead the attack. The squad selection suggests a tactical approach focused on a strong midfield and dynamic attacking options, aiming to replicate the success of their previous World Cup campaign.
