FC Metz have agreed a deal to sign Florian Miguel from Spanish second-division side Burgos, the club confirmed on Thursday. The 29-year-old defender arrives at the Ligue 2 outfit on a free transfer after his contract with Burgos expired on July 1st. Miguel underwent a medical with Metz and is expected to sign his contract imminently.
Metz are rebuilding their squad following relegation from Ligue 1 and are focusing on free agents due to limited transfer funds, according to reports in L’Équipe. Sporting director Frédéric Arpinon is tasked with securing an immediate return to the French top flight. Miguel’s arrival addresses a need at left-back following the departure of Fodé Ballo-Touré, who left Metz after one season.
Miguel brings significant experience in French football, having made 93 appearances in Ligue 2 and 58 in Ligue 1 during his time with Nîmes. He also had a spell with Louvain in Belgium. In recent seasons, the left-back has demonstrated consistency and fitness, featuring in 80 matches across two campaigns with Burgos in the Spanish second tier.
The signing of Miguel provides Metz with a reliable option at left-back, a position where Yannis Lawson’s future remains uncertain. He will compete with academy graduate Tahirys Dos Santos and experienced defender Maxime Colin, who is versatile enough to play on either flank. This addition strengthens Metz’s defensive options as they prepare for a challenging Ligue 2 season.
Miguel’s consistent playing time in Spain suggests he can provide stability in a position that proved problematic for Metz last season, and his familiarity with the French leagues should allow for a quick adaptation. The club will hope he can replicate his recent form and contribute to their promotion push.
