Belgian international Thomas Meunier is set to join Sunderland after his contract with Lille expired, according to The Athletic. The defender arrived in the north of England on Tuesday to undergo a medical ahead of the move.
Meunier departs Lille having recently featured for Belgium at the World Cup, though he had previously indicated he remained open to extending his stay with the French club. At Sunderland, the 32-year-old will reunite with Nordi Mukiele, another former Paris Saint-Germain player.
The move to Sunderland offers Meunier the opportunity to compete in the Europa League, with the club qualifying for the competition after their promotion to the Premier League last season. He will bring significant experience to a relatively young Sunderland squad under manager Régis Le Bris.
Meunier began his professional career with Club Brugge before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, where he won multiple Ligue 1 titles and domestic cups. He joined Borussia Dortmund on loan in 2019 before a permanent transfer to Lille in 2020. He has earned over 60 caps for the Belgian national team, becoming a regular fixture in their squad over the past decade. The transfer represents a new challenge for Meunier as he embarks on a new chapter in the Premier League.
