Milan are considering a move to re-sign Mattia Liberali from Catanzaro, according to reports in Italy. The 19-year-old midfielder impressed during a loan spell with Catanzaro in Serie B last season, and new Milan coach Paulo Fonseca is reportedly keen on bringing him back to the club.
Liberali progressed through Milan’s youth academy, even making a Serie A appearance for the Rossoneri under Fonseca in December 2024 against Genoa. However, his development stalled following that debut, and he was subsequently loaned to Catanzaro last summer. The move was structured to allow Milan to retain 50% ownership of any future transfer fee.
Last season, Liberali became a key player for Catanzaro, featuring in 30 matches across Serie B, the playoffs, and the Coppa Italia. He contributed with four goals and four assists, demonstrating significant progress in his game. He also featured for the Italy Under 19 national team, continuing his positive development.
Milan can re-acquire Liberali for a fee of €3 million, due to the terms of the original agreement. Other Serie A clubs, including Como and Sassuolo, are also monitoring the situation, but Milan are believed to be in a strong position to secure his signature. Sassuolo’s coach, Alberto Aquilani, previously worked with Liberali during their time in Serie B, adding another layer to their interest. Milan’s new tactical setup under Fonseca, a 3-4-2-1 formation, could provide Liberali with opportunities across multiple competitions. The return of Liberali would represent a cost-effective addition to Milan’s squad, bolstering their midfield options and providing a familiar face within the club.
