AC Milan have officially signed defender Mario Gila Fuentes from Serie A rivals Lazio on a permanent transfer. The club announced the completion of the deal on Thursday, confirming Gila has signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2031, and will wear the number 34 shirt.
The transfer fee is reported to be €27.5 million, with Lazio set to receive half of the sum (€13.75 million), while the remaining amount will be paid to Real Madrid. This is due to a reported sell-on clause included in Gila’s previous transfer to Lazio from the Spanish capital. The defender will earn a reported €4.5 million per season with his new club.
Gila, born in Barcelona on August 29, 2000, progressed through the youth ranks in Spain before joining the Real Madrid academy. He made his first-team debut for Real Madrid in the 2021/22 season, contributing to their La Liga title win. He moved to Lazio in the summer of 2022, where he established himself as a key player, making 120 appearances and scoring twice across four seasons in all competitions.
The Spaniard has also represented his country at youth levels, earning three caps for the Under-21 side and receiving a call-up to the senior national team in 2025. Gila expressed his gratitude to Lazio and its supporters in a farewell message, stating his immense sadness at leaving the club and highlighting the love he received during his time in Rome. He believes Lazio are capable of achieving great results in the future.
The arrival of Gila bolsters Milan’s defensive options ahead of next season under new manager Ruben Amorim. The move addresses a need for depth in central defense and provides competition for existing players. Milan will hope Gila's Serie A experience and consistent performances will translate into success with the Rossoneri.
