Milan Fan and Singer-Songwriter Giovanardi Dreams of Guardiola, Maldini Return
Milan supporter and renowned Italian singer-songwriter Mauro Giovanardi has outlined his ambitious, if improbable, vision for AC Milan's future, calling for a dream team of Pep Guardiola and Paolo Maldini to lead the club. The 63-year-old musician, currently on tour promoting his new album, expressed his fandom and outlined his ideal, though highly speculative, scenario for the Rossoneri in a recent interview.
Giovanardi, a lifelong Milan fan, was asked about his dreams for the Rossoneri. "That the Arabs arrive and bring us Guardiola with the return of Maldini," Giovanardi stated, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. He was referring to a potential state-backed takeover and a dream management duo of Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and club legend Paolo Maldini. The musician acknowledged the fantasy, adding, "But for now, it can only be a dream."
The singer, whose fandom dates back to watching the 1969 European Cup final, was less enthused about the club's current trajectory. When asked about current coach Paulo Fonseca, who was appointed this summer, Giovanardi was diplomatic but unenthused. He acknowledged that new coach Paulo Fonseca was a better option than some alternatives but made his ultimate preference clear. "It's better than [Ruben] Amorim or [Paulo] Fonseca, but it's not the best for those who have rejoiced with [Arrigo] Sacchi, [Fabio] Capello and [Carlo] Ancelotti," he said.
Despite his reservations about the current project, Giovanardi named several current players he admires. He expressed hope that winger Rafael Leao would finally find consistency, describing the Portuguese star as "inconsistent and no longer a kid." He also praised the signings of veteran midfielders Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot, as well as goalkeeper Mike Maignan, calling the latter a "phenomenon." When pressed to name his all-time Milan greats, Giovanardi listed Marco van Basten, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Andriy Shevchenko, and Kaká.
Giovanardi's connection to Milan runs deep, having been a fan since the 1969 European Cup final victory over Ajax. He lamented the changing culture of the club's support, noting, "I loved Milan as the team of the people, when there were militant left-wing supporters in the stands. Then the right wing realized it was fertile ground and everything changed." The singer, a former competitive cyclist in his youth, also shared his passion for cycling, naming Tadej Pogacar as the "absolute wonder of our times." While his dream of a Guardiola-Maldini era remains a fantasy, Giovanardi's lifelong passion for the Rossoneri remains undimmed.
