AC Milan have begun their search for a new manager following the potential departure of Stefano Pioli, with Andoni Iraola emerging as the current frontrunner, according to reports in Italy. Discussions between the club’s ownership, led by Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the recently departed Bournemouth manager have already taken place.
Iraola recently concluded his tenure at Bournemouth, guiding the club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. This success has drawn the attention of Milan’s hierarchy, who are seeking a coach capable of implementing a more progressive and attacking style of play. The Basque coach’s reported salary of under €1.8 million per season is considered manageable for Milan, particularly if Pioli’s contract is not mutually terminated, which would incur further costs.
While Iraola is currently the preferred option, Milan are also considering several alternatives. Xavi, the former Barcelona manager, is among those being evaluated, with Ibrahimovic’s past connection with the Spaniard potentially playing a role. Oliver Glasner, who will be available after leaving Crystal Palace, and Mauricio Pochettino, currently managing the United States national team, are also on the shortlist. Pochettino’s position is complicated by his commitment to the US team and Ibrahimovic’s role as a pundit for Fox Sports during the upcoming Copa America.
Other names mentioned in connection with the vacancy include Thiago Motta and Daniele De Rossi, though these links currently lack substantial confirmation. Former Milan player Mark van Bommel, who has been a frequent visitor to San Siro in recent months, is also being considered as a potential surprise candidate, leveraging his strong relationship with Ibrahimovic. A decision is expected within the next week, though the club acknowledges the possibility of unforeseen developments given the number of intermediaries involved.
The appointment of Iraola would signal a clear shift in Milan’s tactical approach, moving away from Pioli’s more pragmatic style towards a high-pressing, offensive system. This change in direction could revitalize the team and potentially challenge for Serie A honors in the coming seasons.
