Luka Modric is a potential target for Real Madrid this summer, following a single season with AC Milan, according to reports in Diario AS. The 40-year-old Croatian midfielder left the Spanish capital last year after his contract expired, joining the Rossoneri on a free transfer.
Modric became a key player under manager Max Allegri at Milan, starting the majority of his 35 appearances and contributing to their push for Champions League qualification. However, a fractured cheekbone sustained late in the season hampered both his and the club’s ambitions, with Juventus ultimately overtaking Milan on the final day of the Serie A campaign. The injury also cast doubt on his immediate future.
Further complicating matters, reports in Italy suggest Modric is considering retirement after leading Croatia at the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Prior to the recent dismissals of Allegri and Sporting Director Igli Tare, Milan had offered Modric a one-year contract extension, but the player has delayed a decision on the offer.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez previously stated the club would welcome Modric back “in whatever form he wished,” opening the door for a potential return. While Modric’s next step remains unclear – possibilities include a managerial role, advisory position, or ambassadorial duties – Real Madrid are reportedly eager to reintegrate the veteran into the club structure. This follows reports the club are also looking to bring back former midfield partner Toni Kroos as an advisor, tasked with input on transfers and dressing room dynamics.
Modric enjoyed a hugely successful period at Real Madrid, winning multiple Champions League titles and La Liga crowns. His potential return would provide a valuable link to the club’s recent successes, even if not as a player. The move could offer a smooth transition into a behind-the-scenes role for the experienced midfielder.
