Luka Modric is increasingly likely to continue his playing career with AC Milan, despite turning 41 in September, according to reports in Italy. The Croatian midfielder enjoyed a successful season with the Rossoneri and recently participated in the World Cup, though Croatia was eliminated in the round of 16 by Portugal.
While Modric has not yet officially communicated his decision to Milan, club owner Gerry Cardinale, manager Ruben Amorim, and other directors are reportedly optimistic about securing his signature. The player’s previous contract has expired, making him a free agent, but this is not expected to be a significant obstacle. Reports suggest Modric would be willing to sign a new one-year deal for a relatively modest fee – he earned approximately €3.5 million net last season – with the primary motivation being the opportunity to compete at a high level.
Modric reportedly appreciated the club’s moves in the transfer market, including the appointments of Amorim and the pursuit of players like Gonçalo Ramos and Mario Gila. A key condition for his continuation was the club’s ambition to challenge for trophies. Amorim has publicly expressed his desire to retain Modric, stating he is willing to speak to the player again if necessary. The manager believes Modric’s experience will be valuable in implementing his tactical system.
Family considerations are also playing a role in Modric’s decision. His wife, Vanja, and their children are settled in Milan, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ema, plays for the AC Milan women’s team. While an offer from Real Madrid to join José Mourinho’s staff was considered, Modric feels he is still capable of contributing as a player. Milan’s return to competitive football under Amorim, with a tactical shift to a 3-2-5 formation, will rely on experienced players like Modric to help with the transition. His signing would provide a boost to the team's possession play early in the season.
The club is currently finalizing the return dates for players who participated in the World Cup. Modric is expected to return slightly later than some of his teammates, but ongoing conversations with the club continue to move the deal closer to completion.
