Mason Greenwood has completed a move to Fenerbahçe from Olympique de Marseille for a reported fee of €40 million, excluding bonuses, the Turkish club announced on Tuesday evening. The 24-year-old forward departs Marseille after two seasons with the club, during which he scored 48 goals in all competitions.
Greenwood’s departure from Marseille was widely anticipated, with Fenerbahçe emerging as the frontrunners for his signature in recent weeks. He had been linked with a potential transfer to Atlético Madrid, however, the Spanish club reportedly cooled their interest following a perceived lack of engagement from the player, with reports suggesting Greenwood did not respond to contact from manager Diego Simeone for two days. Offers from clubs in the Saudi Pro League were also considered.
Greenwood originally rose through the academy at Manchester United, making his senior debut in 2019. He enjoyed a promising start to his career at Old Trafford, becoming a regular in the first team before his time with the club was brought to an abrupt halt in January 2022. Following a period of suspension, Manchester United and Greenwood mutually agreed to terminate his contract in August 2023, paving the way for his move to Marseille.
At Fenerbahçe, Greenwood will join fellow French internationals Mattéo Guendouzi and N’Golo Kanté, strengthening the club’s attacking options ahead of the new season. The Istanbul-based side finished second in the Turkish Süper Lig last season and will participate in the second qualifying round of the Champions League this summer. This transfer provides Fenerbahçe with a proven goalscorer as they aim to make a significant impact in both domestic and European competitions.
This move represents a fresh start for Greenwood, allowing him to continue his career in a competitive league and potentially rebuild his reputation following a difficult period. The substantial transfer fee reflects his goalscoring record and potential value to Fenerbahçe.
