Luka Modric is nearing an agreement to continue his career with AC Milan, despite turning 41 in September, according to reports in Italy. The Croatian midfielder enjoyed a successful season with the Rossoneri, but faced disappointment with Croatia’s Round of 16 exit at the World Cup.
While currently on vacation in Turkey, Modric has been in communication with teammates and Milan’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, and is increasingly convinced that he wants to play on with the club. Although his previous contract has expired, making him a free agent, both club owner Gerry Cardinale and Amorim are optimistic about securing his signature.
Financial terms are not expected to be a major obstacle, with Modric potentially agreeing to an annual contract worth around €3.5 million net – similar to his previous deal. The key factor in his decision appears to be Milan’s ambition following recent moves in the transfer market, including the potential signings of Gonçalo Ramos and Mario Gila. Modric reportedly made it a condition of his continued play that he join a team aiming to compete for trophies.
Modric’s family also plays a significant role in his potential decision, enjoying life in Milan and being reluctant to relocate. While an offer from Real Madrid to join José Mourinho’s staff was considered, Modric feels he still has more to offer as a player. Furthermore, his daughter, Ema, plays for the Milan women’s team and is settled in the city.
The club is currently finalizing the return dates for players who participated in the World Cup, with Estupinan expected back on July 24th. Modric is likely to return at a later date. Amorim has publicly stated his desire to have Modric in the squad, emphasizing his value in possession-based play and his ability to help integrate the team’s tactical approach. Despite concerns about his age and the demands of Amorim’s 3-2-5 formation, the manager believes Modric’s experience and quality will be invaluable. His continued presence would provide Milan with a wealth of experience and tactical flexibility as they aim to challenge for Serie A honors.
