AS Monaco are set to sign 18-year-old defender Emmanuel Mbemba from Paris Saint-Germain, according to L’Équipe. The promising centre-back, who can also play as a left-back, is expected to complete a permanent transfer to the principality after rejecting a professional contract offer from PSG.
Mbemba was considered one of the brightest prospects within the 2007-2009 generation at PSG’s academy, attracting interest from several clubs across Europe, including Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as domestic side Paris FC. His decision to decline a professional deal with the Parisian club follows a similar pattern amongst his peers, with Adam Ayari being the only player born in 2008 to have signed a professional contract with PSG so far.
Other PSG academy graduates from the same age group – Malonga (now at Manchester City), Mouguengue (Dynamo Kyiv), Jangeal (Famalicao), and M. James – have also turned down professional contracts offered by the club. This suggests a broader trend of young talent seeking opportunities elsewhere, potentially due to concerns about playing time or development pathways at the Parc des Princes.
Mbemba’s ability to play both centre-back and left-back provides tactical flexibility, which will be a valuable asset to Monaco manager Adi Hütter. The move offers Mbemba the chance to secure regular first-team football and continue his development within a club known for nurturing young players. This transfer bolsters Monaco’s defensive options as they prepare for the upcoming Ligue 1 season and potentially European competition.
The financial details of the transfer have not been disclosed by either club. Mbemba’s arrival at Monaco signifies the club’s continued commitment to investing in promising young talent and building a competitive squad for the future.
