Bruno Carotti has left his position as Sporting Director of Montpellier HSC, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The departure marks the end of a long association with Montpellier, both as a player and administrator, spanning over two decades. Carotti stated that recent changes within the club prompted him to reflect on his future, ultimately deciding it was time to step down.
Carotti initially played for Montpellier across two spells, from 1991-1995 and again from 2001-2009, becoming the club’s third-most capped player with 377 appearances and 34 goals. He was a key figure during a successful period for the club, culminating in the Ligue 1 title win in the 2011-2012 season, a period when he was already serving in a directorial role. The club described his exit as “a great page in the club’s history turning”.
He transitioned to the role of Sporting Director in 2011, overseeing player recruitment and overall football strategy for over a decade. Carotti explained his decision was motivated by a feeling of no longer being able to commit at 100% and expressed gratitude to the Nicollin family, the club’s owners, for their trust throughout his tenure. He reaffirmed his continued support for Montpellier, hoping to see them return to Ligue 1 swiftly.
Following Carotti’s departure, Antoine Di Fraya will take charge of transfer business for the upcoming summer window. He will work alongside the existing recruitment team and the club’s manager to identify and secure new signings. This move comes shortly after Laurent and Olivier Nicollin affirmed their commitment to remaining at the helm of Montpellier, ensuring continuity in ownership despite the sporting director change. The club is currently competing in Ligue 2, aiming for promotion back to the top flight.
