Afonso Moreira is poised to leave Olympique Lyonnais for Bayer Leverkusen in a deal reportedly worth around €30 million. Foot Mercato report that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs for the 21-year-old winger.
Lyon will realize a significant profit on Moreira, having signed him from Sporting Portugal’s reserve team for just over €2 million. The move comes as a surprise given reports from L’Équipe suggesting the club were in discussions to extend his contract. The potential sale will be welcomed by Lyon’s board, who have been working to address significant financial concerns.
Moreira emerged as a key player for Lyon this season, initially as a substitute for Malick Fofana. Following Fofana’s injury, Moreira established himself in the starting eleven, contributing 6 goals and 9 assists in 34 matches. His performances were instrumental in Lyon’s improved form. The club carried a debt of €500 million two years ago and, despite cost-cutting measures led by Michele Kang, still operates with a €100 million deficit.
Last year, Lyon committed to injecting €60 million into the club to stabilize finances and avoid exclusion from European competitions. The sale of Moreira will further aid in achieving these financial goals. The club is also currently engaged in legal action regarding the management of its previous leadership. This transfer represents a further shift in personnel for Lyon as they navigate ongoing financial and administrative challenges.
