Jose Mourinho has reportedly informed Real Madrid president Florentino Perez of his desire to sign at least four new players should he return to the club as manager, according to Spanish publication Diario AS. The Portuguese manager is currently in charge of Benfica, but widespread reports suggest he is in advanced negotiations to replace Alvaro Arbeloa at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2011 and 2013, and a return appears increasingly likely, though a clause in his Benfica contract allowing Real to secure his services for €3million (£2.6m) is set to expire today, Tuesday, 26 May. Should Real fail to act before the deadline, Benfica are expected to demand a significantly higher fee of €15million (£12.9m) for his release, as reported by Portuguese outlet Record.
The potential arrival of Mourinho is already influencing transfer planning at the Spanish giants. Diario AS reports that Mourinho has specifically requested at least one new central defender, one full-back, and two central midfielders. This demand for reinforcements stems from anticipated departures and uncertainty surrounding current squad members.
Dani Carvajal and David Alaba are both set to become free agents when their contracts expire next month, creating immediate needs at full-back and centre-back. Furthermore, the futures of midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dani Ceballos are currently unclear, prompting Mourinho to seek additional options in that area of the pitch. Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in Tchouameni, with some reports suggesting a potential €80million (£69m) bid, according to Fichajes.
Alongside the managerial situation, Real Madrid are currently engaged in presidential elections. Current president Florentino Perez is being challenged by renewable energy entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme, who has promised a new vision for the club, emphasizing sporting and social initiatives, as stated during his announcement at the Valdebebas training ground, as reported by The Athletic. Riquelme is looking to end Perez’s two decades of leadership, during which he has stood unopposed in the last four electoral cycles.
Mourinho’s potential return and the ongoing presidential election create a period of significant change for Real Madrid, with the club’s transfer strategy heavily influenced by the outcome of both situations. Securing Mourinho’s targets will be crucial to his plans for rebuilding the squad and challenging for titles.
