Jose Mourinho is poised to return to Real Madrid with a clear indication of financial support from president Florentino Perez should he win the upcoming club elections on June 7th. Perez has pledged to strengthen the squad with “new stars” and “reinforcements” if re-elected, according to Spanish publication Diario AS.
Mourinho has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal to manage Los Blancos once more, succeeding his previous stint between 2010 and 2013, and is currently set to depart Benfica. The Portuguese manager has reportedly outlined his transfer priorities to Perez, requesting at least one central defender, one full-back, and two central midfielders for the summer window.
Real Madrid endured a trophy-less 2025-26 season, marking the second consecutive year without silverware, prompting the need for significant squad investment. Players linked with a move to the Bernabéu include Manchester City’s Rodri and Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, reflecting Mourinho’s desire to bolster the midfield options. Rodri, a defensive midfielder for Manchester City, made 33 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring twice and providing no assists.
Perez’s commitment to backing Mourinho stems from a desire to restore Real Madrid to its former glory. He stated, as reported by Diario AS, that “the best players in the world will always play with me” and emphasized the club’s need for a strategic approach, stating “Real Madrid doesn't improvise.” The election is contested by Enrique Riquelme, a renewable energy entrepreneur, who has promised to appoint Real Madrid legend Raul as the club’s sporting director if elected.
Currently, Real Madrid operates without a dedicated sporting director, with director general Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat handling key decisions under Perez’s leadership. Riquelme has not yet revealed his preferred head coach should he win the election, focusing instead on restructuring the club’s leadership. The outcome of the election will significantly shape Real Madrid’s transfer strategy and overall direction for the 2026-27 season and beyond.
