Incoming Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has indicated a desire to sign a new right-back to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to reports from Spain. The news comes as Alexander-Arnold’s first season at the Estadio Bernabeu has been met with mixed reviews in the Spanish media.
Mourinho, who has a verbal agreement in place to take over at Madrid this summer, is prioritizing an overhaul of the squad, with defensive reinforcements identified as a key area for improvement. Dani Carvajal is set to depart at the end of his contract, leaving a void at right-back. Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in the summer of 2025, but has struggled with injuries and adapting to a new system.
According to The Athletic journalist Mario Cortegana, Mourinho has communicated to the club, through his agent, the need for defensive signings. Madrid are actively searching the market for a right-back, prioritizing a player who would serve as a backup option within their budgetary constraints. While some reports initially suggested Manchester City could be interested in re-signing Alexander-Arnold in the summer of 2026, it appears Mourinho is not currently considering selling the England international.
Despite the call for reinforcements, Spanish publication AS recently stated that Madrid have no plans to sell Alexander-Arnold this summer, labeling him a ‘definite keep’. However, the same outlet acknowledged the defensive vulnerabilities Alexander-Arnold has displayed. Fabrizio Romano has also stated that Real Madrid are happy with Alexander-Arnold’s attitude and that he will remain at the club this summer, dismissing speculation linking him with a return to the Premier League or a move to Saudi Arabia. The club believes he is still adapting to a new league and environment.
Alexander-Arnold’s performance has been a talking point, with AS noting that he, along with other recent Madrid signings, has not yet lived up to expectations. Nevertheless, Mourinho’s arrival could provide the structure and guidance needed for Alexander-Arnold to rediscover his best form, potentially solidifying his position as a key player for the Spanish giants.
