Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has informed club officials of his desire to retain midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, effectively ending Manchester United’s pursuit of the France international this summer. The news comes following Florentino Perez’s re-election as Real Madrid president and Mourinho’s subsequent return to the Bernabeu.
Manchester United were reportedly keen to bolster their midfield options ahead of their return to Champions League football, with manager Erik ten Hag hoping to add up to three new players to the engine room. While Brazil international Ederson’s arrival on July 1st is confirmed, the club had identified Tchouaméni as a potential second signing, particularly with concerns over securing their primary target, Elliot Anderson, who is also attracting interest from Manchester City.
Tchouaméni’s future at Real Madrid had been subject to speculation recently, fuelled by reports of an altercation with teammate Federico Valverde. However, according to The Sun, Mourinho has made it clear that any offers for the 26-year-old will be rejected, despite the player entering the final two years of his contract. United had reportedly attempted to “flex their muscles” in their pursuit, but their efforts have proven unsuccessful.
This setback will force Manchester United to refocus their attention on alternative midfield targets. Real Madrid, meanwhile, are moving forward with their own summer transfer plans under Mourinho’s leadership, having already agreed deals for Netherlands full-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for a fee of €20m and France defender Ibrahima Konate, who will arrive on a free transfer from Liverpool. Dumfries is expected to replace Dani Carvajal, while Konate will compete for a starting position alongside Eder Militao and others. These signings signal a clear intent from Real Madrid to strengthen their squad and challenge for titles once again.
The quick resolution regarding Tchouaméni demonstrates Mourinho’s influence and his commitment to building a competitive squad at the Bernabeu. With Tchouaméni remaining, Real Madrid’s midfield options are further strengthened, while Manchester United are left to continue their search for reinforcements.
