Jose Mourinho has informed Real Madrid officials of his desire to retain Aurélien Tchouaméni, effectively ending Manchester United’s pursuit of the France midfielder. The news comes following Florentino Perez’s re-election as Real Madrid president and Mourinho’s subsequent return to the Bernabeu after a 13-year absence.
Manchester United were hoping to bolster their midfield options this summer, aiming to add up to three new players as they prepare for their return to Champions League football and a Premier League title challenge. Tchouaméni had emerged as a potential target, particularly with concerns growing over securing Elliot Anderson from Manchester City.
Tchouaméni’s future at Real Madrid had been subject to speculation recently, fuelled by an alleged altercation with teammate Federico Valverde. However, according to Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun, Mourinho has been decisive in his assessment, instructing the club to reject any offers for the 26-year-old. Despite the midfielder entering the final two years of his contract, any attempt by United to “flex their muscles” will be unsuccessful.
This setback for United will force them to refocus on alternative midfield targets. Real Madrid, meanwhile, are moving forward with their own summer overhaul, having already secured the signings of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for a fee of €20 million and Ibrahima Konate, who arrives on a free transfer from Liverpool. Dumfries is expected to replace Dani Carvajal, while Konate will provide competition in the centre-back position following David Alaba’s departure. Konate’s arrival could potentially impact Trent Alexander-Arnold, who struggled to establish himself at the club following his free transfer.
Mourinho’s swift action regarding Tchouaméni signals his intent to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for major honours after a two-year trophy drought for the club. The club’s activity in the transfer market suggests a busy summer ahead as Mourinho looks to reshape the team in his image.
