Everton manager David Moyes has dismissed the possibility of signing Liverpool’s recently departed Mohamed Salah, citing the intense rivalry between the two clubs. The comments came in response to a question on Egyptian television station ON Sport, as relayed by The Liverpool Echo. Salah and Liverpool agreed to mutually terminate his contract this summer, bringing an end to a hugely successful, though recently turbulent, spell at Anfield.
Moyes stated that a move for the 34-year-old Egyptian is “impossible” due to Salah’s significance to Liverpool and the deep-rooted animosity between the Merseyside clubs. He acknowledged Salah’s “exceptional” career with Liverpool, while also admitting that Everton supporters would be pleased to see him leave. The Toffees boss described the winger as a “great goalscorer” and a player “enjoyed by the Liverpool supporters.”
Salah scored nine goals against Everton during his time at Liverpool, cementing his status as a key figure in the club’s recent successes. However, his final season was impacted by a strained relationship with former manager Arne Slot, contributing to the decision to part ways. This has led to speculation that Salah might seek a move to a rival club as a means of proving himself after his Liverpool exit.
Despite the speculation, Moyes’ comments effectively rule out a move to Goodison Park. The future destination for Salah remains uncertain, though a move to the Saudi Pro League has been heavily linked in recent reports, with some outlets suggesting a potential €60-80 million windfall for the player. His next club will undoubtedly be one of significant stature, given his legendary status at Anfield. The forward’s departure marks the end of an era for Liverpool, and the club is now focused on bolstering their attacking options with new signings.
