Tottenham Hotspur have added Marcos Senesi to their squad on a free transfer after his contract with Bournemouth expired, with Danny Murphy suggesting the Argentine can offset the potential departure of Cristian Romero. The arrival of Senesi, alongside Andy Robertson and the prospective signing of Jan Paul van Hecke, signals a significant defensive overhaul under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Speaking exclusively to TEAMtalk, Murphy highlighted Senesi’s reliability and consistent playing time as key attributes. While acknowledging Romero’s superior athleticism and aerial ability, Murphy believes Senesi offers a more disciplined and calmer presence in defence. He specifically praised Senesi’s distribution from the back, stating it is among the best in the Premier League, and his “phenomenal” passing through the lines.
Senesi joined Bournemouth in 2022 from Feyenoord, making 55 appearances for the club across all competitions. He established himself as a regular starter, providing a composed presence in the Premier League. Romero, meanwhile, has been a key figure in Tottenham’s defence since arriving from Atalanta in 2021, but has been consistently linked with a move to Spain.
Murphy also expressed confidence in Tottenham’s ability to challenge for European qualification next season, believing a full pre-season under De Zerbi will be crucial. He suggested a top-eight finish is “attainable”, with a push for the top six a realistic ambition given the club’s budget and potential summer spending. He anticipates a “feel-good factor” at the club, with fans fully supporting the manager and a revamped squad. The addition of Senesi is seen as a positive step towards achieving these goals, providing a solid foundation in defence.
