Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has stated he will consider his future with the national team following their unexpected defeat to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32 on Monday.
Speaking after the penalty shootout loss, Nagelsmann affirmed his desire to continue in the role, outlining his intention to lead the side through the upcoming European Championship and Nations League campaigns. However, he conceded he would be prepared to step aside if the German Football Association (DFB) decides a change of leadership is required. “I'm ready and would like to prepare for the European Championship and the Nations League. If I am no longer wanted, then we need to talk about it,” he said.
Nagelsmann, whose contract with Germany runs until 2028, took over as head coach in 2023, replacing Hansi Flick after a disappointing Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. His appointment was met with optimism, given his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches following successful spells at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, and a brief stint at Bayern Munich. He had previously guided Bayern to a Bundesliga title in 2022.
The defeat to Paraguay represents a significant setback for Germany, who were hoping to make a deep run in the tournament. Nagelsmann attributed the loss to a slow start and a lack of cutting edge in attack, stating, “We simply took too long to get our wing play going. As the game went on, we tried to force it more and ended up creating more situations in the box. We had control, but we lacked punch.”
Nagelsmann also expressed his frustration with the decision to disallow Jonathan Tah’s goal during the match, describing it as “a joke.” Despite the controversial call, he acknowledged that Germany ultimately failed to perform to the required standard. He emphasized the team’s unity and positive training environment, adding, “I am very disappointed because I feel we have a very cohesive team, and the impressions from training were always good. No one is failing on purpose. I feel sorry for all the fans in the stadium and at home.”
The DFB are now facing a critical decision regarding Nagelsmann’s position, with the team’s performance raising questions about their ability to compete at the highest level. The outcome of any discussions could significantly impact Germany’s preparations for the European Championships next summer.
