Julian Nagelsmann’s position as head coach of the German national team is under review following their Round of 16 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay at the World Cup, according to Sky Germany.
The German Football Association (DFB) held an initial analysis meeting with Nagelsmann on Wednesday, as confirmed by DFB president Bernd Neuendorf, and further discussions are planned upon the team’s return to Germany. A final decision regarding the 38-year-old’s future is anticipated within days, rather than weeks.
Nagelsmann was appointed as Germany’s head coach in September 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick after a disappointing run of form. Prior to the tournament, reaching the Round of 16 was considered the minimum expectation for the team, with a quarter-final appearance and beyond viewed as a successful outcome. The elimination against Paraguay has prompted immediate scrutiny of the team’s performance and Nagelsmann’s leadership.
Sky Germany reports that Jürgen Klopp would be the DFB’s primary target to replace Nagelsmann should they choose to part ways. Klopp recently announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of the current Premier League season after nine years at Anfield, where he secured a wealth of silverware including the Champions League and Premier League titles. His availability makes him an attractive option for the DFB, who are seeking to restore Germany’s standing in international football.
Nagelsmann previously managed Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, establishing a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches. He also had a brief and controversial spell at Bayern Munich before taking the national team role. The swiftness with which the DFB are evaluating Nagelsmann’s position signals a degree of concern about the team’s trajectory and a desire for a swift resolution.
