Manuel Neuer has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Bayern Munich, securing his future at the club until 2027, according to Sky Germany. The agreement, reached between Bayern and the veteran goalkeeper, is expected to be formally signed before Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture against 1. FC Köln.
The extension represents a significant commitment from both Neuer and the Bavarian giants, despite the 38-year-old’s recent injury history. Neuer has been a mainstay in the Bayern goal since joining from Schalke 04 in 2011, winning eleven Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns. Last season, he suffered a serious leg injury while skiing, sidelining him for a significant portion of the campaign and leading to speculation about his future.
While the financial details haven't been fully disclosed, the deal includes a pay cut for Neuer, who currently earns an estimated €20 million annually. This adjustment reflects both the club’s financial considerations and Neuer’s willingness to continue playing for Bayern, even with adjusted terms. The club has been carefully managing its wage bill as it plans for future investments in the squad.
Jonas Urbig, who has made 21 appearances this season, will continue as Bayern’s second-choice goalkeeper. The club views Urbig as Neuer’s long-term successor and intends to provide him with increased opportunities to develop, preparing him for the eventual transition in goal. Sven Ulreich is anticipated to remain with the team as the third-choice option, providing further depth and experience.
Neuer’s continued presence provides stability and leadership within the Bayern squad. The extension allows the club to avoid a potentially disruptive search for a new first-choice goalkeeper and ensures a smooth handover when Neuer eventually retires, with Urbig primed to step into the role.
