Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich have both signed contract extensions with FC Bayern Munich, the club confirmed, securing their goalkeeping positions through the 2026/27 season. The extensions effectively end any possibility of Alexander Nübel returning to Bayern next season, as the club already has a settled goalkeeping hierarchy including the long-term contracted Jonas Urbig.
Neuer, 38, has been with Bayern since 2011 and is approaching his 600th appearance for the club, having established himself as one of the world’s leading goalkeepers during his tenure. He has also captained the side since 2017, lifting numerous domestic and European titles, including two Champions League trophies. Recent discussions are also underway regarding a potential return to the German national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Club president Herbert Hainer lauded Neuer as a “truly exceptional” goalkeeper, placing him among the best in Bayern’s history, while CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen described him as “one of the best signings in our club’s history.” Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, indicated that Urbig will receive increased opportunities, potentially as Neuer approaches the end of his career.
Ulreich, 37, initially joined Bayern from Stuttgart in 2015 and has won 21 trophies with the club, despite primarily serving as a backup goalkeeper. He has made 104 appearances for Bayern over the past decade, providing reliable cover and competition for Neuer. Ulreich expressed his continued enthusiasm for the game and the enjoyment he derives from being part of the Bayern squad.
Sporting director Christopher Freund emphasized the strong team dynamic between the three goalkeepers, stating that their collective character is unparalleled among European clubs. The club intends for Urbig to develop under the guidance of Neuer and Ulreich, preparing him to eventually take over as the first-choice goalkeeper. This arrangement provides Bayern with stability in a crucial position and a clear succession plan for the future.
