Newcastle United have reached an agreement to sign Sean Steur from Ajax, with the deal potentially forming part of a triple raid on European clubs by the Tyneside club. The Magpies have long admired the 18-year-old midfielder and are looking to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad after a challenging summer in the transfer market.
Scouts had been tracking Steur’s progress for some time, believing he possessed similar potential to fellow Dutch talent Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar, despite Smit receiving more widespread attention. Steur made his debut for Ajax in February 2025 and earned a permanent place in the first team ahead of the current season, quickly establishing himself as a promising talent from the renowned Ajax academy.
The gifted midfielder is comfortable on either foot and is known for his technical quality and ability to control the tempo of games from central midfield. Despite narrowly missing out on selection for the Netherlands’ World Cup squad, Steur has already earned senior international recognition. Many within Dutch football believe he has the potential to become a truly generational talent.
Newcastle are reportedly paying around €30million (£25.6m) for Steur, with Ajax accepting the offer after failing to agree to terms on a contract extension with the player. The move comes as Newcastle reshape their squad following the departure of Sandro Tonali and ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of captain Bruno Guimaraes, who has attracted interest from Arsenal. Anthony Gordon’s departure has also prompted the club to accelerate their rebuilding efforts.
The club has already secured the signing of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and is confident of completing a deal for Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for €42m (£36m). Newcastle also retain interest in Lamine Camara of Monaco, who is valued at €50m (£43m), and are likely to make him a priority target. The combined cost of Steur, Manzambi, and Camara could reach £105m. Newcastle believe Steur’s arrival aligns with their long-term recruitment strategy, prioritizing both technical ability and future development potential.
