Reports in Germany are conflicting regarding a potential bid from Newcastle United for Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas. Bild reported on Wednesday that the Premier League club had submitted a €12 million offer for the 28-year-old, but Sky Germany has refuted those claims, stating there has been no contact or interest from Newcastle.
Bild’s reporting suggests Nicolas is attracting attention from multiple clubs, with four concrete offers already received. These offers reportedly include interest from another Bundesliga side, relegated Wolfsburg, a club in Spain, and now, allegedly, Newcastle. The German tabloid claims Mönchengladbach would likely demand a fee of around €15 million to consider selling their goalkeeper.
Nicolas has established himself as a regular starter for Mönchengladbach over the past two seasons, making 34 appearances in all competitions during the 2023-24 campaign. Prior to joining Gladbach in 2021, he spent five seasons with Werder Bremen, initially as a backup before becoming a key figure in the side. He has one senior cap for the German national team, earned in a friendly against Estonia in 2021.
Newcastle’s goalkeeping situation is currently stable with Nick Pope as their established number one, although the Englishman missed a significant portion of last season through injury. Martin Dúbravka provided cover, but is 35 years old and his long-term future at the club is uncertain. Should the reports of a Newcastle bid prove accurate, it suggests the club are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping options ahead of next season and potentially provide competition for Pope. However, Sky Germany’s firm denial casts significant doubt on the veracity of Bild’s initial report.
At this stage, the situation remains unclear, with conflicting information emerging from reputable German sources. It is possible that Newcastle have scouted Nicolas as a potential target, but have not yet made a formal offer, or that Bild’s information is premature. Further developments are expected in the coming days to clarify the situation.
