Newcastle United have agreed a €60 million deal to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, according to Sky Sport Deutschland. The Switzerland international midfielder will sign a long-term contract at St James’ Park.
The Magpies successfully competed with Aston Villa for the 20-year-old’s signature, with Villa reportedly increasing their interest following a serious knee injury to Amadou Onana. Manzambi’s arrival offers Eddie Howe another option in midfield, though he is not positioned as a direct replacement for Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes.
Manzambi enjoyed a breakout season with Freiburg, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists across all competitions. He continued to impress during the recent World Cup, contributing three goals and two assists in just 200 minutes of play before a knee injury curtailed his involvement in the tournament. Despite the injury, his performances had already established him as a sought-after talent.
While Manzambi has occasionally featured in a deeper midfield role for Freiburg, his attacking contributions have been particularly noteworthy. This makes him a potential alternative to players like Joe Willock or Joelinton in Newcastle’s squad. Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy believes the transfer represents excellent value for Newcastle, stating Manzambi possesses an ‘elite’ mentality and a relentless desire for improvement.
“At Freiburg, Johan Manzambi was the best player on the pitch. At all times,” Murphy told FootballTransfers. “His €60m transfer fee absolutely obliterates Freiburg's biggest previous sale, but it could turn out to be a bargain for Newcastle as his all-round toolkit in midfield makes him the perfect player for the Premier League.”
Newcastle are currently implementing a transfer strategy focused on acquiring promising young players, and Manzambi appears to fit that profile. His signing could provide a significant boost to the team’s midfield options as they look to build on their recent success. The acquisition of Manzambi signals Newcastle’s intent to continue investing in talent and compete at the highest level.
