Nico Williams Requests Athletic Club Exit, Eyes Manchester United Move
Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has reportedly informed his club of his desire to leave this summer, with a move to Manchester United his preferred destination. According to a report from Catalan outlet El Nacional, the Spanish international has expressed his wish to depart the Basque club, having set his sights on a transfer to Old Trafford. The 23-year-old is said to see the move as an "ideal" step in his career, particularly with the potential departure of Marcus Rashford, who is on loan at Barcelona with a purchase option. Athletic Club, however, are under no pressure to sell, with the player under contract until 2035 after signing a long-term deal last year.
A potential transfer is complicated by Williams' reported €90 million release clause, a figure that could prove a significant obstacle for Manchester United. The club is also in the market for at least one central midfielder, which may limit their ability to meet Athletic Club's valuation. United have held a long-standing interest in the winger, who has been a standout performer in La Liga when fit, despite a season disrupted by injuries that limited him to just 16 league starts.
The 23-year-old has been a key figure for Athletic, making over 150 appearances for the club after rising through their youth academy. His performances earned him a regular place in the Spanish national team setup, and his contract extension last year was seen as a major coup for the Basque club. However, the player now appears ready to seek a new challenge at a club with regular UEFA Champions League ambitions.
For Manchester United, the pursuit of a left-sided forward is a priority, especially with Rashford's future at Old Trafford uncertain. The English forward is currently on loan at Barcelona, who hold a purchase option. If Rashford departs permanently, it would free up significant funds and create a clear need for a left-winger in Erik ten Hag's system. Williams, with his explosive pace and direct dribbling, is seen as a like-for-like replacement in that role, offering a similar profile of speed and one-on-one ability.
However, the financials of any deal remain a significant hurdle. United are also known to be in the market for at least one, if not two, central midfielders, and committing a fee in the region of €90 million for Williams would severely limit their spending power elsewhere. The club is also understood to be tracking other forward options, including RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, as they weigh up the value in the market. While Williams is a long-admired target, the final decision will likely hinge on the Rashford situation and the broader financial strategy at Old Trafford this summer.
