Nicolas de Tavernost has been appointed as the new president of the Stade Rennais board of directors, the club confirmed on Friday. The announcement was made by François-Henri Pinault, owner of the Ligue 1 side, and will take effect from June 1st. De Tavernost, 63, will immediately participate in operational meetings concerning player transfers and major strategic and investment decisions.
Pinault explained that De Tavernost’s arrival aligns with the club’s ambition to become a more influential force both domestically and within French football. He highlighted the need for someone with strong business acumen, capable of managing the club’s operations, upholding its strategy, and representing its interests to national governing bodies. Pinault specifically referenced Guillaume Cerutti as a similar profile within the club, emphasizing the desired skillset.
The appointment comes as Rennes finished sixth in Ligue 1, securing a place in next season’s Europa Conference League – or potentially the Europa League should Lens win the Coupe de France. This appointment signals a desire for greater stability and strategic direction as the club looks to build on recent progress. De Tavernost’s previous role as head of Ligue 1+ suggests a deep understanding of the French football landscape.
De Tavernost’s experience is expected to be invaluable as Rennes navigates the complexities of the transfer market and seeks to establish itself as a consistent competitor in Ligue 1 and European competition. Pinault stated his intention for Rennes to be an active participant in shaping the future of French football, and believes De Tavernost possesses the qualities to achieve this goal. The move is seen as a significant step in the club’s long-term development.
