Torino have secured the loan signing of defender Niels Nkounkou from Eintracht Frankfurt for the remainder of the season. The 23-year-old left-back, who was born in France but represents Guinea internationally, will spend the rest of the campaign in Serie A after failing to establish himself as a regular starter in the Bundesliga.
Nkounkou's move to Italy provides Torino with defensive reinforcement following injuries in their squad. The player arrives with experience in several of Europe's top leagues, having previously played for Everton, Saint-Étienne, and Cardiff City before joining Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2023. According to reports from Italy, the loan deal does not include an option for Torino to make the transfer permanent at this stage.
The move represents a chance for Nkounkou to secure regular first-team football ahead of this summer's international commitments. He is expected to be part of Guinea's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in January, and will be looking to build form and fitness with Torino before the tournament. His versatility, capable of playing as a wing-back or further forward, is seen as an asset for manager Ivan Jurić's tactical system.
For Eintracht Frankfurt, the loan allows a player who has made just three Bundesliga appearances this season to gain valuable experience elsewhere. The German club has depth in the full-back positions, with Philipp Max and Aurélio Buta currently preferred, making Nkounkou's temporary departure a practical solution for all parties. His development will be monitored closely by the Frankfurt hierarchy as they plan for next season.
Nkounkou's career began at Marseille's academy before he moved to Everton in 2020. His journey through various leagues has given him a broad footballing education, though consistency at the highest level has remained elusive. The loan to Torino, a club known for developing defensive talent, could provide the stability needed to unlock his potential. His arrival comes as Torino sits mid-table in Serie A, looking to push for European qualification in the second half of the season.
