Alexander Nübel will leave Bayern Munich permanently this summer, ending his five-year spell with the Bavarian club. Sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed on Saturday to Sport1 that the 29-year-old goalkeeper is not part of the club’s plans for the upcoming season.
Nübel initially joined Bayern from Schalke 04 in 2020, but has largely been used as a backup option, making only four competitive appearances for the club. His time in Munich has been punctuated by loan spells, including two seasons with Monaco and the most recent three with VfB Stuttgart. He enjoyed a successful stint with Stuttgart, becoming a key player and demonstrating his capabilities in the Bundesliga.
Freund stated that Bayern are satisfied with their current goalkeeping options, consisting of Manuel Neuer, Jonas Urbig, and Sven Ulreich. “We had discussions with his management, and Alex also knows about our plans,” Freund said. “We will go into next season with this trio – that is the plan.” The confirmation effectively signals the end of Nübel’s hopes of establishing himself as a regular starter at the Allianz Arena.
Nübel’s future remains uncertain, though a return to Stuttgart has been speculated as a possibility given his positive impact during his loan period. Several other Bundesliga clubs could also emerge as potential suitors for the German goalkeeper. His departure will allow Bayern to streamline their squad and potentially free up funds for other transfer targets. Nübel will be seeking a club where he can secure regular playing time and continue to develop his career.
