- FC Nürnberg have completed the loan signing of Senegalese defender Mikayil Faye from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais, the 2. Bundesliga club confirmed. The loan deal is for one year, with Nürnberg also securing an option to purchase Faye at the end of the season.
The 22-year-old arrives at Max-Morlock-Stadion seeking regular first-team football after a challenging period with Rennes and a largely unused loan spell at Serie A side Cremonese. Faye joined Rennes in 2022 from FC Barcelona for a reported fee exceeding €10 million, but struggled to establish himself in the French top flight. Last season with Cremonese, he made only two Serie A starts as the club ultimately suffered relegation.
Faye initially rose to prominence within Barcelona’s youth academy, demonstrating considerable potential as a central defender. Despite impressing at youth level, he departed the club without making a senior appearance. His international career is still in its nascent stages, having made his debut for Senegal against Gabon in March 2024, scoring in the process, but earning only one cap to date.
Nürnberg’s board member Joti Chatzialexiou expressed the club’s belief in Faye’s potential, stating that the loan move is designed to help the player reach the required level for the 2. Bundesliga. Chatzialexiou acknowledged Faye’s limited playing time during his previous loan, emphasizing the need for patience as he integrates into the team. Faye himself expressed gratitude for the club’s faith in him and his eagerness to contribute on the pitch.
