Strasbourg manager Gary O’Neil has formally requested the club’s ownership, BlueCo, to sign two new strikers during the upcoming summer transfer window following a 1-1 draw with Angers on Sunday. The call for reinforcements comes after Strasbourg’s elimination from the Europa Conference League, losing 2-0 on aggregate to Rayo Vallecano, and their subsequent inability to qualify for European competition next season.
Currently eighth in Ligue 1, Strasbourg have faced growing discontent from supporters, exemplified by a recent heated exchange between captain Emmanuel Emegha and fans after the defeat to Rayo Vallecano. Emegha is set to depart this summer, with a deal already in place for his transfer to Strasbourg’s sister club, Chelsea, ahead of the 2026-27 season. Adding to O’Neil’s attacking concerns, David Datro Fofana will also return to Chelsea upon the expiration of his loan spell.
O’Neil expressed his frustration with the team’s recent performances, stating to reporters (via L’Equipe) that they “didn’t do enough to win” against Angers and missed an opportunity to close the gap on Monaco. He described the performance as symbolic of their season, emphasizing the need for improvement and expressing anger with the players’ display. He challenged them to prove their worth in the remaining two games.
Beyond the immediate need for attacking options, O’Neil highlighted the need for broader improvements, stating, “We really need to work hard this summer to be better.” He confirmed discussions with the ownership regarding recruitment, specifically requesting two strikers, and emphasized the desire to improve the club culture, player quality, and squad depth. He also criticized the club’s January transfer window activity, claiming they weakened the squad instead of strengthening it.
Chelsea’s involvement with Strasbourg extends beyond player transfers, having recalled Mamadou Sarr from a loan spell in January to bolster their own defensive options, though Sarr has seen limited playing time since his return. Kendry Paez was also recalled by Chelsea, while several other players were either sold or loaned out during the winter window. Strasbourg brought in Gessime Yassine and secured loan deals for Aaron Anselmino and Datro Fofana during that period.
BlueCo is currently prioritizing the search for a permanent manager for Chelsea following the recent dismissal of Liam Rosenior, but O’Neil’s request underscores the urgent need for investment in the Strasbourg squad to address their shortcomings and compete more effectively in Ligue 1.
