Crystal Palace are intensifying their interest in Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell as they anticipate the departure of Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea, according to TEAMtalk. The move comes as new Palace manager Pierre Sage has decided against pursuing four defenders currently at Chelsea.
Cresswell, a former Leeds United centre-back, has impressed since joining Toulouse in 2024, establishing himself as a prominent defender in Ligue 1 and attracting attention from clubs across Europe. Palace have identified the 23-year-old as a leading defensive target and are reportedly pushing harder than other interested parties to bring him back to the Premier League.
The Eagles are preparing for life without Lacroix, who is nearing a transfer to Stamford Bridge, and have been evaluating potential replacements. Chelsea have offered several central defenders – Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, and Trevoh Chalobah – as part of negotiations, potentially to reduce the overall cost of acquiring Lacroix.
However, Palace have indicated they are pursuing alternatives, with Cresswell emerging as their preferred choice. The club believes his age, prior Premier League experience, and recent development in Ligue 1 make him a suitable long-term replacement for Lacroix. Sage’s strong endorsement is considered key to the deal.
Sources reveal that Sage has personally approved the transfer, having closely followed Cresswell’s progress at Toulouse during his time coaching in Ligue 1. The Palace manager is understood to be a significant admirer of the England Under-21 international. Palace’s recruitment team shares Sage’s assessment, believing Cresswell possesses the attributes to become a key player in their defence for years to come.
Cresswell has experienced a career resurgence since leaving Leeds for Toulouse, gaining regular first-team football and fulfilling his potential. His performances have drawn attention from English clubs, including his former side Leeds, who have monitored his situation and considered a potential return. Newly promoted Coventry City have also expressed interest as they seek to strengthen their defence.
Despite interest from other clubs, Crystal Palace are currently leading the chase for Cresswell. The club views him as a player capable of immediately contributing to their back line while also offering room for further development. Palace are engaged in discussions to accelerate the deal, aiming to secure a replacement before Lacroix’s expected departure is finalised. The coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining Cresswell’s future.
