FC Bayern Munich began preparations for the 2026/27 season on Tuesday with a significantly depleted first-team squad, welcoming back several players following the conclusion of loan spells. Only six senior players participated in the initial training session at Säbener Straße, as reported by the club’s official website. Among those returning to Bavaria was João Palhinha, who rejoins the squad after a loan period with Fulham.
Palhinha’s return provides Bayern with increased midfield depth, though his long-term future at the club remains uncertain following previous transfer speculation. The Portuguese international established himself as a key player for Fulham during his time in the Premier League, consistently demonstrating strong defensive capabilities and passing range. He initially joined Bayern in the summer of 2023, only to see a move to West Ham United fall through on transfer deadline day.
Also back in training were Arijon Ibrahimović, Sacha Boey, and Armindo Sieb, all of whom spent time on loan last season. Veteran goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and Tom Bischof completed the small group of first-team members present. The unusually low number of senior players available is due to ongoing international commitments for many stars, including those involved in the recent European Championship and Copa América tournaments.
To supplement the limited numbers, U19 coach Leonhard Haas and newly appointed Bayern II coach Dante oversaw a session involving over 35 youth players from the club’s academy. U23 and U19 players Wisdom Mike and Felipe Chávez were among those participating, providing an opportunity for young talent to impress the coaching staff.
Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl are currently undergoing rehabilitation training following serious injuries that kept them out of the World Cup. Bryan Zaragoza was also absent from the session, with Bild reporting that he is sidelined due to knee inflammation. The club has not yet provided a timeline for the return of Gnabry, Karl, or Zaragoza, leaving their availability for the start of the Bundesliga season in question. The return of Palhinha, however, offers a boost to the squad as they navigate the early stages of pre-season.
