João Palhinha is expected to return to Bayern Munich for pre-season training, according to Sky Germany, after a potential permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur failed to materialize. Spurs had been linked with a move for the Portuguese midfielder following a loan spell during the 2025/26 season, but have since shifted their focus to other targets, completing the signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Palhinha joined Bayern Munich in 2023 from Sporting Lisbon, quickly establishing himself as a key player in midfield with his robust tackling and passing range. However, a loan to Tottenham followed in the subsequent season, where he featured regularly, making 35 appearances across all competitions and earning praise for his performances in defensive midfield. The loan move was intended to provide Palhinha with consistent first-team football, something he wasn’t consistently receiving in Bavaria.
A return to Sporting Lisbon has also been considered, but Bayern’s asking price is reportedly proving to be a stumbling block in negotiations. The Bundesliga champions are believed to be seeking a fee that reflects Palhinha’s value as an established international player and a proven performer in top-level football. Sporting, while interested in re-signing their former player, are hesitant to meet Bayern’s valuation at this stage.
Despite the cooling interest from Tottenham and the complications surrounding a return to Lisbon, Palhinha’s long-term future at Bayern remains uncertain. Several other clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation, and discussions with potential suitors are ongoing, though no concrete offers have emerged. The 30-year-old is currently under contract with Bayern until 2028, giving the German club a strong negotiating position.
The situation leaves Palhinha in a state of limbo, with his future dependent on whether Bayern are willing to lower their demands or another club emerges with a compelling offer. His ability to break up play and provide defensive solidity would be a valuable asset to many teams across Europe, but for now, he appears set to rejoin the Bayern squad as pre-season preparations begin. This development could force Bayern to reassess their midfield options, potentially opening the door for other departures or additions before the start of the new season.
