Paolo Maldini has agreed to become the new director of Italy’s national team and president of Club Italia, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed on Thursday. The appointment, a four-year contract, was secured following discussions with the newly elected FIGC president Giovanni Malagò. In a surprising addition, former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo will join as an advisor.
This marks a significant shift in structure for the FIGC, with Maldini taking on a role that encompasses oversight of the entire national team system, from the senior squad to youth levels. His responsibilities will include contributing to the selection of the next national team coach, a decision that will be made collaboratively with Malagò and Leonardo. The project is centered around revitalizing the Italian national team, with a particular focus on preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
Malagò expressed his satisfaction with the appointment, stating that Maldini had been his primary target since taking office. He emphasized the importance of Maldini’s role extending beyond the senior team to encompass the development of all national youth squads. Malagò also highlighted the value of Leonardo’s involvement, acknowledging the demanding nature of the task ahead. The president indicated that no potential candidates for the national team manager position have been considered yet, preferring to reach a consensus with Maldini and Leonardo.
Maldini, a legendary figure for both AC Milan and the Italian national team during his playing career, brings a wealth of experience and prestige to the role. He previously served as technical director at AC Milan, where he played a key role in the club’s resurgence. Leonardo’s addition provides further expertise, drawing on his successful spells as a sporting director at both Milan clubs and Paris Saint-Germain. The combination of Maldini’s tactical insight and Leonardo’s network could prove crucial in attracting top coaching talent and implementing a long-term strategy for Italian football. This appointment signals a clear intent to modernize the FIGC’s approach to national team management and build a sustainable pathway to future success.
