Pau Cubarsi Takes Responsibility After Red Card in Champions League Defeat
Barcelona's teenage defender Pau Cubarsi has taken to social media to assume responsibility for his team's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. The 19-year-old was sent off in the 43rd minute of the quarter-final first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium for a last-man challenge, a decision that swung the tie heavily in Atletico's favor. The 2-0 defeat leaves Barcelona with a mountain to climb in the second leg at the Camp Nou.
In a post on Instagram, Cubarsi wrote: 'An action can condition the result and the tie. That's football, and I take responsibility for the result. There is still a long way to go in this tie and we are more united than ever: we are a family and we have always shown that. Onwards, with strength and determination, we will never give up.' The young centre-back was dismissed for a professional foul, a similar incident to a red card he received in last season's Champions League round of 16 against Benfica.
The dismissal of Cubarsi, who has been a breakout star for Barcelona this season, forced the Catalan side to play over 45 minutes with ten men, a task made more difficult by the early substitution of key midfielder Frenkie de Jong due to injury. The loss of the 19-year-old, who has been a mainstay in defense, was a significant blow to Barcelona's tactical setup and their chances of securing a positive result away from home.
This is not the first time Cubarsi has been sent off in a crucial Champions League knockout match, raising questions about the immense pressure placed on the club's academy graduates in high-stakes matches. Despite his young age, Cubarsi has been a revelation this season, breaking into the first team and the Spanish national team setup with a series of composed and technically assured performances. His inexperience, however, was exposed in a critical moment on the biggest stage.
Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez will now have to plan for the second leg without one of his starting defenders. The red card rules Cubarsi out of the return leg at the Camp Nou, a significant blow to Barca's hopes of overturning the two-goal deficit. The club will now look to the experience of players like Ronald Araujo and Inigo Martinez to marshal the defense in the high-pressure return fixture, with the team's European season hanging in the balance.
