Gianpiero Piovani has been appointed as the new manager of Roma Women, following a surprising departure of Luca Rossettini, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The change at the top comes despite Rossettini leading Roma to a Scudetto and Coppa Italia double in his debut season in women’s football.
Rossettini, a former Serie A defender with 300 appearances for clubs including Siena and Cagliari, reportedly expressed a desire to return to managing in the men’s game, prompting the club to seek a replacement. Roma ultimately agreed to terminate his contract through a pre-existing clause, allowing him to pursue opportunities outside of women’s football.
Piovani arrives at Roma with a strong resume in the Serie A femminile, having most recently managed Inter for two seasons. Prior to his time with Inter, he gained experience with Brescia and Sassuolo, establishing himself as a specialist in the women’s game. His primary objective will be to defend Roma’s league title while simultaneously navigating their participation in the Champions League.
The managerial changes have created a domino effect across Serie A Women, with David Sassarini moving to Inter after a successful spell at Napoli Women. Juventus have appointed Isaac Guerrero, a Spanish coach with extensive experience in methodology and coach education, to replace Max Canzi, who has moved to Cagliari’s youth setup. Napoli have turned to Alessandro Spugna, the manager who led Roma to their first two league titles, despite a four-point deduction for administrative irregularities. Fiorentina and Milan have retained their existing managers, Pinones Arce and Suzanne Bakker respectively, while Como, Lazio, Parma, Sassuolo, and Ternana have also confirmed their coaching staff for the upcoming season.
This period of significant change suggests a heightened level of competition and ambition within Serie A Women as clubs prepare for the new season.
