Ralf Rangnick has signed a contract extension with the Austrian national team, committing his future to the ÖFB (Austrian Football Association) until 2028. The extension preemptively ends speculation linking the 67-year-old German with a technical director role at Serie A club AC Milan, according to reports in recent days. Rangnick had been considered among the candidates to reshape the Milanese club’s football operations.
The ÖFB confirmed the extension in a statement, emphasizing Rangnick’s commitment through the UEFA European Championship in 2028. This news arrives after Rangnick successfully guided Austria to qualification for the World Cup, ending a 28-year absence for the nation from the tournament. The statement highlighted the team’s development both on and off the pitch under his leadership, noting Austria’s growing presence on the international stage.
Rangnick assumed the role with Austria in 2022, following a challenging six-month spell as interim manager of Manchester United. His time at Old Trafford saw limited success as he struggled to implement a clear tactical identity despite a reputation for innovative coaching. Prior to joining Austria, Rangnick was highly regarded for his work in the Bundesliga, notably with RB Leipzig, where he established a high-pressing, energetic style of play.
Austria are set to begin their World Cup campaign against Jordan on Tuesday, facing subsequent group stage matches against Argentina, the current World Cup holders, and Algeria. The contract extension provides stability for the Austrian national team as they prepare for these significant challenges and look to build on their recent qualification success. This long-term commitment allows Rangnick to continue implementing his vision for the team and further develop young talent within the Austrian system.
