Marcus Rashford has indicated a desire to remain at Barcelona beyond his current loan spell, following the club’s La Liga title-winning 2-0 victory over Real Madrid on Sunday. The England international scored the opening goal in the match, securing Barcelona’s 29th La Liga crown and dethroning their rivals.
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United with an option for a permanent transfer. He has made a significant impact, contributing to 28 goals in 47 appearances with 14 goals and 14 assists. After scoring against Real Madrid, Rashford admitted he initially lacked confidence in taking a free-kick, only deciding to shoot after encouragement from teammates.
“I don’t know [about my future],” Rashford stated after the match. “I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. So we will see.” He emphasized his desire to win trophies, adding, “I come here to win. This team is a wonderful team. They’re going to win so much in the future as well. To be a part of that would be special.”
However, a permanent deal is not straightforward. While Barcelona have a €30 million (£26m, $35m) purchase option, sources indicate the club would prefer to extend Rashford’s loan for another season. This presents a challenge for Manchester United, who may be forced to renegotiate the terms of the deal, especially with two years remaining on Rashford’s contract and a seeming reluctance to see him return to Old Trafford.
According to Spanish publication Sport, Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick believes Rashford could still have a future at the club, despite his successful loan spell. However, other voices within the club reportedly favour a sale due to Rashford’s high salary. Barcelona are reportedly hesitant about exercising the purchase option, questioning Rashford’s consistency and defensive contribution, and exploring younger, more affordable alternatives.
Other clubs are now monitoring the situation, with Bayern Munich reportedly considering a move for Rashford, viewing him as a preferable option to Anthony Gordon of Newcastle. Tottenham have also been linked, though any deal would be contingent on specific conditions. The situation remains fluid, with multiple potential outcomes for Rashford’s future.
