Marcus Rashford is expected to return to Manchester United for pre-season training, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano. The England international will not be joining Barcelona on a permanent deal this summer, with the Spanish club opting not to trigger the €30 million buy clause in his loan agreement.
Rashford spent the latter half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Barcelona, making a limited impact under Hansi Flick. Prior to the loan move, the forward had struggled for consistent form at Old Trafford, initially falling out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim. He has since rebuilt some of his form during his time in Spain, but not enough to convince Barcelona to pursue a permanent transfer.
Initially, Manchester United were believed to be keen on a permanent sale, but Romano reports that direct contact between Rashford’s representatives and the club has opened the door to a potential reintegration. The change in managerial circumstances, with Michael Carrick now in charge, is a key factor in this shift in approach. Manchester United have informed Rashford that he is welcome back for pre-season training as part of Carrick’s squad.
According to Romano, Rashford is also open to the possibility of returning and assessing the situation. While the club are prepared to welcome him back, a future transfer has not been ruled out should another suitable offer emerge. Rashford’s current contract with Manchester United runs until 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position.
With the departure of Amorim and his preferred 3-4-3 system, Manchester United are currently short of natural left wingers. While players like Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha have been considered, neither are ideal fits for the role. Reintegrating Rashford could provide a solution to this issue, potentially allowing the club to focus their transfer funds on other targets, such as Mateus Fernandes. If Carrick can build a positive relationship with Rashford, the player could prove to be a valuable asset for the team next season.
