RB Leipzig have officially appointed Martín Demichelis as their new head coach, with the Argentinian beginning work with the club on Monday. The move follows the departure of Ole Werner and represents a significant step for the Bundesliga side as they look to build on recent progress.
RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer detailed the reasoning behind the appointment in an interview with Bild, emphasizing Demichelis’s blend of tactical acumen, physical conditioning, and passion for the game. Schäfer stated that Demichelis has absorbed valuable lessons from numerous high-profile coaches throughout his playing career and understands the demands of performing under pressure.
Demichelis’s coaching philosophy centers around high-intensity, proactive football, with a focus on aggressive pressing and swift transitions after winning possession. Schäfer described it as an “attack mode” style, which resonated with the club’s leadership during discussions and analysis. This approach aligns with the increasingly popular trend of energetic, forward-thinking tactics in the Bundesliga.
The former defender’s previous managerial experience includes a brief but impactful spell at RCD Mallorca, where despite ultimately failing to prevent relegation, he secured a points-per-game average that would have been sufficient for European qualification had he been in charge for the entire season. Schäfer dismissed concerns about the relegation, highlighting the positive impact Demichelis had in a short period.
Schäfer acknowledged the success of fellow former players Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen and Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich, but cautioned against drawing immediate comparisons. While recognizing the potential benefits of appointing coaches with extensive playing experience, he stressed the importance of allowing Demichelis to implement his own vision and build upon the solid foundation already in place at Leipzig. The club aims to enhance its intensity, pressing, physical dominance, and overall enthusiasm under his leadership. This appointment signals Leipzig's ambition to take the next step in their development and compete at the highest level.
Demichelis enjoyed a distinguished playing career, featuring for clubs such as Bayern Munich and Manchester City, as well as earning 35 caps for Argentina. He retired in 2017 and transitioned into coaching, initially working within the Manchester City academy before taking on the role at Mallorca.
