Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of left-back Marc Cucurella, according to The Athletic. The deal is reported to be worth €60 million, comprised of a €55 million base fee and a further €5 million in potential add-ons. Cucurella, 27, still has three years remaining on his contract with Chelsea.
The move for Cucurella appears to be a proactive step by Real Madrid as they assess the future of current left-back Ferland Mendy. While no official announcement regarding Mendy’s departure has been made, the acquisition of Cucurella suggests the club is preparing for potential changes in that position. Cucurella’s arrival provides competition and depth within the squad.
Cucurella joined Chelsea in 2022 and has since made 163 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals. He quickly established himself as a regular starter under multiple managers, demonstrating his versatility and defensive capabilities. Prior to his move to Stamford Bridge, he impressed during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion, earning recognition as one of the Premier League's most promising young full-backs.
This summer, Cucurella attracted interest from several clubs, including Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, but Real Madrid moved decisively to secure his signature. The Spaniard has also been named in the Spain squad for the upcoming European Championship, having earned 24 caps and scored one goal for La Roja. His international experience will be a valuable asset for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
The transfer provides Real Madrid with a dynamic and experienced full-back capable of contributing both defensively and in attack. For Chelsea, the sale represents a significant return on their investment in Cucurella, and frees up funds for potential reinforcements in other areas of the pitch.
